Grade A1 Poppy Seed
Nutty, round black poppy seeds are neither black, nor round, nor are they nuts. They are the slate blue seeds of the breadseed poppy, kidney-shaped, with a pitted exterior. This culinary-grade poppy seed has an oil content of roughly 45% by weight, so it brings exquisite richness to the bagels it tops or the pastries it fills.
These Grade A1 Poppy Seeds are grown specifically for culinary purposes and should not be confused with the pharmaceutical-grade opium poppy. These seeds are procured from a seed pod and straw that contain an extremely low level of opiates. To protect the integrity of the hull and oil content of the seeds they are unwashed and untreated, but if seeds come in contact with poppy milk during harvest, the milk will not cause an opiate contamination.
Tips From Our Kitchen
Dry-roast poppy seeds in a pan before using to make the flavor blossom. Poppy seeds are ubiquitous with bread toppings, so sprinkle them liberally on bagels and breads. If you’re a sourdough baker, throw them in your sourdough discard with rosemary for rustic homemade crackers. Our poppy seeds make for a fun salad dressing, particularly when paired with bright fruit flavors like lemon or strawberry. Add texture to pasta by adding poppy seeds in as a final garnish. Grind into paste and bake into a sweet, yeasted dough for a classic Eastern European poppy seed roll.
Due to their high oil content, we recommend refrigerating or freezing Grade A1 Poppy Seeds to prolong the life of the seed and prevent rancidity.
