Cumin Seed

Cumin Seed
Cumin Seed
Cumin Seed has an unmistakable flavor that is spicy-sweet, aromatic and earthy, with a hint of citrus and bitter undertones. A commodity on the world’s earliest spice routes, Cumin Seed is one of the most consumed spices around the globe, with its presence firmly established in cuisines that span Asia and Africa, India, the Caribbean, and Latin America.
Cumin seed has historically been used medicinally; the benefits of it were documented by Greek and Egyptian physicians going as far back as the reign of Ramesses III, who ruled Egypt from 1186-1155 BCE. It was primarily used to aid with digestion. We can still see the in practice with the spoonful of cumin seeds one is invited to take when leaving an Indian restaurant.
Tips From our Kitchen
Roast your cumin seeds before using as this will release a toasted nutty flavor. Cumin works well with a wide range of spices and is a key ingredient in various spice blends and many bean, couscous, curries, rice and vegetable dishes. Cumin dazzles when used with beans and lentils, so try your hand at some hearty stews. It is also a great complement to eggplant, so put baba ghanoush on the menu. If you prefer to buy it ground, we have Ground Cumin Seed available, too.
