Gyro Seasoning
Gyros, pronounced "YEE-rohs" are quickly gaining traction across the United States. A food that has its origins in Greece, this sandwich is rapidly becoming a fan favorite in even the smallest of American towns. Where it began in America is up for debate, since the several men who claim they did it first are all friendly competitors who sell gyro meat cones.
Despite this competition, the gyro business continues to boom! Americans are becoming more and more curious about different food options, and new food options are more readily available than ever before. For every obscure cuisine, you can probably find at least one restaurant solely dedicated to it somewhere in the US. Luckily for us, gyros are becoming more mainstream.
The Story of Gyro Seasoning
This is the second blend developed by our chef, Jeff. He wanted to create something that would bring that incredible flavor of gyro meat to the everyday cook, or someone who doesn't have access to a gyro cone and a rotisserie to house it.
The gyro is a sandwich similar in style to the Turkish doner kebob or the Middle Eastern Shawarma sandwich. All three of these have different, distinct flavor profiles, even though they have the same base- thinly sliced meat on a bread-based wrap, and a variety of vegetables to top it off. In the case of the gyro, a traditional sandwich will be topped with French fries.
What's in it?
Our Gyro Seasoning is hand blended from onion, garlic, salt, oregano, marjoram, black pepper and rosemary.
Flavor Profile
This seasoning blend tastes of onion and garlic with lovely herbal notes and a slight bite from the black pepper.
Where to Use
This seasoning blend is perfect for making your own gyro meat loaf from a combination of beef and lamb. Gyros and Tzatziki Sauce are such a classic combination, and this blend is a perfect ingredient for any recipe for this sandwich and sauce pair.
Use Gyro Seasoning on things like meat, pasta, or even vegetables. It is tasty on root vegetables, and roasted carrots are the perfect candidate for this seasoning blend. To make a quick snack of roasted carrots flavored with this blend, oil a baking sheet with a thin layer of oil and cut up some fresh carrots in about quarter inch pieces, keeping each piece as uniform as possible. If the carrots are different sizes they won't cook evenly. Add about a teaspoon of seasoning to a pound of carrots before roasting. This is of course just a recommendation- you may prefer more or less seasoning, and you may need to do a little experimenting before you decide how much seasoning you want to use. We recommend mixing the carrots and seasoning in a bowl with a small amount of olive oil to more easily coat the carrots. Bake the vegetables in the oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until the edges are browned. This makes for a perfect side for dinner or just an afternoon snack.
We like using this blend with potatoes as well! The rich onion and garlic flavor with the herbaceous touch is a wonderful partner to the taste of mashed potatoes, but roasted potatoes will come out similarly to the roasted carrots- full of flavor and an easy snack or side.
Helpful Hints
Our Gyro Seasoning is very flavorful, so be careful to only use a little and then add more as you go. It is quite easy to over season, but it is hard to mellow out the flavors if you add too much!
A tablespoon of Gyro Seasoning will season about a pound of meat.
