Falafel Seasoning
Sweet onion, pungent garlic, and earthy cumin make up the base of flavors in our Falafel Seasoning. Lemony, peppery coriander and snappy parsley ride along the top of this seasoning blend, lightening up the deep flavors and tempering the mild heat of black pepper and touch of cayenne. Cardamom powder, at once fruity and piney, with a touch of menthol and citrus, envelops this seasoning blend like a cloud, elevating it from cumin’s earthiness and keeping this seasoning blend lithe and playful. We blend our Falafel Seasoning in small batches in our facility, to ensure freshness and flavor in our products.
Falafel, a combination of mashed chickpeas, minced herbs and a healthy mix of spices, is a staple of Middle Eastern cuisine, and crosses several cultural boundaries. It is found in the cuisines of Egypt and Israel; and in Yemen, Lebanon, and Palestine. The dish is relatively modern. The oil that falafel is fried in was prohibitively expensive to use in such large capacity in ancient times, and its earliest presence in cookbooks and literature occurred in 1882. And while chickpeas are the primary bean used in falafels today, it’s thought that they were first made with fava beans. While there is some debate about the origin of the word “falafel”, some scholarship indicates that the name of this dish came from the word ful (fūl), which is Egyptian for “fava bean”.
Tips From Our Kitchen
This Falafel Seasoning blend is, in fact, wonderful in Falafel, so make them as individual appetizers to dip, or put them into a pita and enjoy a Falafel Sandwich. It's delicious sprinkled over hummus that’s topped with pomegranate seeds. Halloumi, a Mediterranean cheese that doesn’t melt, is delicious cut in slices and fried. Toss Falafel seasoning over halloumi fries for a street food treat. Add to the flavor base for lentil soup, or shell some fava beans and stir this into the sauté. This blend is also excellent tucked under the skin of roasted chicken; tuck half a lemon in the chicken’s cavity for extra fragrance while it roasts. Toss over grilled asparagus. Bake eggplant slices that have been tossed with oil and Falafel Seasoning, then add to couscous. Mix tahini and yogurt and stir in some Falafel Seasoning for a dip for fresh vegetables.
Our Falafel Seasoning is hand blended with salt, garlic, onion, ground cumin, ground coriander, parsley flakes, cayenne pepper, black pepper and cardamom powder.
