MSG (Monosodium Glutamate)
MSG (Monosodium Glutamate)
MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) is a flavor enhancer and a naturally occurring amino acid. It is commonly referred to as MSG, monosodium glutamate, monosodium salt, monohydrate, sodium glutamate, or L-glutamic acid.
MSG has been designated generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the Food and Drug Administration. This flavor enhancer emphasizes meaty, umami flavors while allowing other flavors to unify into a smooth, balanced blend.
MSG is frequently sought after by:
- snack, frozen food, sauce, condiment, and dog food manufacturers;
- Chinese, Asian-fusion, and American restaurants;
- food trucks;
- catering companies; and
- seasoning companies
MSG is available in most of our size variants but is not available in 1/2 cup jars.
Flavor Profile
MSG is a white, odorless powder that has a strong salty, meaty, earthy, umami flavor.
How To Use
MSG is used to enhance savory foods and works most successfully with meaty or sour flavors. It does not have much positive effect on sweet or bitter foods. It can be used to replace salt in dishes, either by substituting MSG for a portion of salt in a recipe, or completely swapping MSG in for salt. Use it judiciously to test how it impacts flavor; substitute 1/2 teaspoon of MSG for every teaspoon of regular salt.
