Berbere
Berbere
Berbere is Ethiopian cuisine’s signature spice mix. This MSG-free, complex seasoning is also called berbere spice, berbere seasoning, or berbere spice mix.
Berbere, pronounced “BER-ber-ay", is the Ethiopian word for pepper. This spicy blend features warmth from black pepper and paprika and heat from cayenne, meaning it delivers peppery flavor on several different levels.
Berbere is popular with independent spice shops; seasoning companies; olive oil shops; coffee shops; Mexican and African restaurants; butchers; and caterers.
Flavor profile
Berbere is spicy and smoky, with sweet notes and earthy undertones.
How to Use
Berbere can be used as a dry rub for meats, or a seasoning for stews, lentils and grains. It can be made into a simple, flavor-packed condiment like a traditional Ethiopian Awaze Sauce. Saute Berbere with onions to make a base for soups and stews like the Ethiopian chicken stew, Doro Wat. It is a key ingredient in Spinach and Egg Shakshuka and Sambousek. Use it to give a spicy twist to burgers, meatballs, lentils and beans, and roast chicken.
Berbere is delicious on ribs, steaks, chicken, stew, meatballs, beef, kebabs, in barbecue sauce, with potatoes, cauliflower, collard greens, peanuts, popcorn, stirred into yogurt, and tossed over pizza.
