Dried Jalapeno Flakes, Capsicum annuum, are medium-heat chile flakes that measure 2,500-8,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU). They are also called dried jalapeno, jalapeno flakes, or jalapeno pepper flakes.

With a gentle pungency but noticeable heat, most fresh jalapenos are picked when they are still green in color. For this product, green jalapenos are picked, cleaned, and dried, and then ground into a wide flake that is good for adding texture, flavor, and heat.

Dried Jalapeno Flakes are most popular with:

  • creameries;
  • butchers; and
  • Mexican restaurants

Approximately 3/4 - 1-1/2 teaspoons of Jalapeno Flakes are equal to one fresh jalapeno, bearing in mind that the size of jalapenos can vary greatly.

Flavor Profile

Jalapeno Flakes have an earthy-grassy flavor with medium-level heat.

Heat Level

These chiles are considered medium heat chiles, measuring between 2,500 and 8,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU).

How to Use

Jalapeno Flakes can be used in chili, cheeses, cornbread, dips, salsa, sauces, spice blends, stews, taco meat, or sprinkled over chicken, eggs, pork chops, and pizza.

Dried Jalapeno Flakes can be used in place of red pepper flakes. You should be aware that these are not the same thing. Jalapeno Flakes are milder and considered a medium-heat chile flake at 2,500 - 8,000 SHU while possessing a bit more flavor. We consider Red Pepper Flakes a hot heat chile flake at 30,000 - 35,000 SHU and do not possess much flavor.

Dried Jalapeno pairs well with allspice, cardamom, chives, cilantro, coriander, cumin, dill, parsley, and sumac.
