General Tso's Secret is a spicy and complex, MSG-free seasoning blend. It is also called General Tso seasoning, General Tso’s seasoning, General Tso chicken seasoning, General Tso spicy, General Tsos, or General Xiao.

General Tso, or Zuo Zongtang, was indeed a real person. This 19th-century Chinese military leader was born in the Hunan province, and this dish was originally created—in Taiwan in the 1950s—with Hunan-style flavors, as a nod to this general and his career. This dish has changed quite a bit since its inception, but our spice blend incorporates the hot, fermented, salty, oniony, garlicky, culinary legacy of the region.

Businesses that frequently purchase General Tso’s Secret are:

  • brew pubs;
  • gastro pubs;
  • food trucks;
  • catering companies;
  • independent spice shops;
  • olive oil shops;
  • butchers;
  • seasoning companies; and
  • companies that manufacture sauces and dips

Flavor Profile

General Tso’s Secret delivers umami flavor with savory and nutty undertones, with a bit of spice and punchy citrus notes.

How To Use

Naturally, use General Tso’s Secret to make a delicious and surprisingly simple General Tso’s Chicken. Swap it in as the base seasoning when making Udon Noodle Soup or enjoy it in a miso ramen bowl. This blend adds heat and depth to Asian Chicken Lettuce Rolls. Choose this when making Pork Wontons if you want spicy flavors instead of smoky ones. Or try it on Oven Roasted Beef Brisket for a spicy twist on an American classic.

Great taste Great for sprinkling on anything. Doesn't taste like general Tso's but is very good.

LOVE this blend of Spices! I've been really cooking out of my comfort-zone these past couple of months, and have been missing Asian take out. Adding General Tso's Secret to Chicken and Vegetables pan-fried with noodles really helped! :) It definitely adds a kick to the dish!

We love it! I love it! So much so, I'm on the east coast and felt compelled to share it with my family on the west coast. They love it too! Attached is a pic of my daughters sweet and sour chicken dish she made using General Tso's Secret 😊.

Is just OK. I recently ordered several items from Spices Inc. General Tso's Secret was the least impressive of the lot. I found it a little more useful when ground a bit finer in my stainless steel mortar and pestle. Everything else I received was above expectations. I will be ordering again.
