Baharat
Baharat
Baharat (ba-ha-RAAHT) is a classic Mediterranean spice blend that is salt- and MSG-free. It is also known as baharat seasoning or baharat spice mix.
Baharat simply means “spices” in Arabic and was named because it became ubiquitous to the cultures ringing the Mediterranean, from the Levant to northern Africa. Every region has its preferred blend; Turkey often includes mint in their blends, while rose petals make their way into blends in Egypt.
While Baharat is traditionally associated with the Mediterranean, it can be found in other surprising places. When Federal Donuts, a lunch counter and donut shop with multiple locations across Philadelphia, released its master donut recipe, we learned that Baharat was the signature spice that has defined their donuts since their opening in 2011.
Baharat is popular with independent spice shops; olive oil shops; seasoning companies; and bistro restaurants.
Flavor Profile
Baharat tastes smoky, sweet, and warm.
How to Use
Use Baharat on ground meat, especially lamb. Blend a tablespoon of Baharat into a pound of ground lamb, press around skewers to make Kofte Kebabs. Stir into Falafel for rich flavor. It’s a terrific seasoning for African Vegetable Stew. Baharat works well with ground beef, chicken, or delicate white fish like cod. Combine Baharat with lemon juice and olive oil for a simple marinade. Mix Baharat with olive oil for a bread dipping sauce, or add to the mix for Three Cheese Puff Pastry. Surprise holiday guests with Baharat-orange shortbread. Toss over chickpeas and roast to make a chana masala. Our customers also love to use it to spice up simple rice.
Baharat goes well with meats, poultry, seafood, beans and legumes, grilled and roasted vegetables, oils, sesame seeds, and cheeses.
