Herbs de Provence is an aromatic blend of herbs that are commonly grown in Provence, an administrative region of southeastern France. It is also referred to as herbes de Provence, herb de Provence seasoning, or Provencal herbs.

Prior to the 1960s, “herbs de Provence” only applied to herbs that could be found in Provence, not a cohesive seasoning blend. Thanks to the influence of Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking, interest in French food increased. By the 1970s, the herbs in Provence were collected into a blend and packaged as herbs de Provence.

This blend is popular with olive oil shops; Mediterranean and French restaurants; independent spice shops; seasoning companies; and food manufacturers.

Flavor Profile

Herbs de Provence is sweet and gentle herb blend, with notes of pine, mint, and lemon. It delivers peppery depth and floral top notes.

How To Use

An excellent addition to any Mediterranean region dish, Herbs de Provence is wonderful when combined with olive oil and added to grilled chicken or fish. We love Chicken with Herbs de Provence, a quick and easy dish that overflows with flavor. But this versatile blend goes well with a variety of meats. Marinate chunks of lamb in Herbs de Provence and enjoy Grilled Lamb Kabobs. Make an agrodolce pan sauce with Herbs de Provence, honey, and vinegar, for unforgettable Honey Balsamic Pork Chops. Vegetarians can enjoy this blend with mushrooms in Savory Spinach and Mushroom Crepes. This blend is spectacular with used with cheese, tomatoes, and oven roasted potatoes. Stir into gravies, garlic and oil pasta sauce, salad dressings, soups and stews.

Great for when you are Great for when you are roasting meats, and don't want the typical BBQ brisket flavor; and don't have the time or inclination to come up with your own blend of spices. I've been shopping at Spices Inc. for years... not as often as I'd like, now that we're empty nesters. Many of the items here are no longer, or never were available in stores, especially in a smaller metro area. Can you imagine what it would cost to make your own pesto, buying your basil in 1 oz. bottles at the grocery store!
