Ground Cloves
Ground Cloves
Ground Cloves, Syzygium aromaticum, are also known as ground clove or cloves ground. This pungent powder guarantees a minimum of 10% volatile oil.
Cloves come from the dried flower bud of an Indonesian evergreen tree. While the leaf and stem of this tree are also flavorful and edible, the oil-rich bud is the most valuable product. Cloves are generally regarded for their pungent flavor, but also contain antiseptic and anesthetic qualities, which is why Ground Cloves can impart a numbing sensation in the mouth.
Ground Cloves are popular with seasoning companies; honey, sauce, and baked goods manufacturers; independent spice shops; Mexican and African restaurants; delis; and breweries.
We also have Whole Cloves and Organic Ground Cloves available.
Flavor Profile
Ground Cloves taste sharp and fruity, with a flavor that hints of cinnamon, pepper, and a little heat.
How to Use
Add Ground Cloves to baked beans, barbecue Dry Rib Rubs, and sauces. Their aromatic quality shines in Cincinnati chili and hearty stews, like this Birria - A Mexican Beef Stew. Ground Cloves are excellent when added to sweets like poached apples or Cinnamon Ancho Chile Chocolate Bark. Mix them into eggs for French toast or sprinkle some in Chai Spiced Overnight Oats for breakfast. Ground Cloves have a sturdy flavor that doesn’t dissipate, so sauté with onions as a flavor base for soups, a North African tagine, or a rich Indian curry.
Cloves pair well with cabbage, beets, cinnamon, fish, pork, tamarind, soy sauce, coffee, chocolate, chile peppers, apples, plantains, and sesame.
