Arrowroot Powder, Tacca leontopetaloides, is sometimes called arrowroot, arrowroot powder wholesale, sweet arrowroot powder, bulk arrowroot powder, arrowroot starch, or arrowroot flour. This fine, white powder is a thickening agent derived from the roots of the arrowroot plant, a relative of the yam, that grows in tropical climates.

Arrowroot has a neutral flavor, no odor, and a silky mouthfeel. It provides a glossy appearance without clouding, so it’s appropriate for dishes with a clear finish, like jellies or fruit pie fillings.

It has nearly twice as much thickening ability as corn starch and three times the thickening power of wheat flours and should be used cautiously in cooking.

Businesses that frequently purchase Sweet Arrowroot Powder are seasoning companies; independent spice shops; olive oil shops; and companies that manufacture jams.

Flavor Profile

Arrowroot Powder has a completely neutral flavor, so it will not change the way a dish tastes.

How To Use

Arrowroot Powder can stand up to the acidity of vinegar so use it as the crispy coating on sweet and sour chicken. It thickens the sauce in this delicious Spanish Saffron Chicken. It is commonly used in Asian cooking such as Instant Pot General Tso’s Style Chicken General Tso's Chicken,  Egg Drop Soup and Chinese 5 Spice Chicken Stir Fry.  Thicken Cinnamon Spiced Apple and Cranberry Sauce for an unforgettable holiday side. Use it to create the silky sauce that makes Grilled Broccoli with Adobo Lime Marinade sing. Coat a greased pan with Arrowroot Powder so baked goods don’t stick. It works wonderfully with eggs and custards, so it’s brilliant for thickening custard-based ice cream.

To use the powder as a thickening agent while you're cooking, create a slurry by whisking together one teaspoon of arrowroot powder with two teaspoons of a cold liquid, such as water. Pour the mixture into the dish you wish to thicken and cook the food over medium heat for about two minutes.

Wonderful! So glad to have found you. Customer service is great, and shipped quickly. I buy it in bulk and they use thick, strong bags; unlike another place I used to order from. It's only my 2nd order, but I'll be back very soon.

Arrowroot Powder I am from St. Vincent and the Grenadines where the original starch was exported from. Traditionally the starch is perhaps our main indigenous ingredient for homemade porridge/cereal. I grew up eating this mainly for breakfast or it is also given persons are ill with an upset stomach etc. We also use the starch to make wonderful fried or baked bread or as we call them locally "bakes". These are made with shredded coconut, they are not sweet and are usually eaten warm by itself, with fried fish or any other meat product. It is a speciality and done by persons who have learnt the specialised skill which was passed down from generations, mainly from the indigenous Carib people. Happy to see that it is being used otherwise even though the source isn't from my homeland :)

Arrowroot Powder But it is surely the best thickener I have encountered yet. Compared to the high prices for small amounts at supermarkets, I was able to get a pound for a very reasonable amount, and a little goes a VERY long way! Arrowroot and cardamom pods were the primary ingredients for a simple milk pudding I was making, and both spice inc. ingredients worked wonderfully! Just remember - arrowroot thickens much better than flour, so don't cook it too long or you will end up with a bread dough texture!
