Ground Celery Seed, Apium graveolens, is also called celery seed powder, celery seed ground, ground celery powder, or ground celery. It has an essential oil content of 2-3% by weight.

Ground celery is derived from the whole, dried fruit of the wild celery plant. It is indigenous to eastern and southern Europe and the Mediterranean. Celery was called "smallage" by the Greeks and Romans, and it was originally wild harvested for its medicinal properties. Celery Seeds didn’t appear in recipes until the 1800s, when it was included in pickling recipes.

Ground Celery Seed is popular with:

  • seasoning companies;
  • sauce, gourmet nut, and breading manufacturers;
  • American, barbecue, and burger restaurants; and
  • independent spice shops

We also have whole Celery Seed, Organic Ground Celery Seeds, and Organic Celery Seeds available.

Flavor Profile

Ground Celery Seed has a hay-like, grassy, and slightly bitter taste and aroma.

How to Use

Use Ground Celery Seed in blends and rubs like this Dry Rib Rub, or in any signature blend or barbecue rub where you’d like to add a bit of grassy bitterness. Mix it into macaroni salad and deviled eggs. It gives hearty flavor to the cabbage slaw that tops these Blackened Tilapia Tacos. It’s great in soups and stews, so add it to this thick and hearty Split Pea Soup or Chicken and Dumplings

Ground Celery Seed is used in Bloody Mary drinks and tomato juices and sauces, sausages, egg, meat and vegetable dishes, gravies, sauces and stews. Ground Celery Seed works well in combination with salt, onion, bell peppers, turmeric, sage, cumin, soy sauce, ginger, and in various vinegars.
