Dukkah
Dukkah
Dukkah is an MSG-free seasoning blend that is texturally complex, savory, and can even be eaten on its own as a snack. It is also known as duqq, duqqa, dukkah spice, dukkah seasoning, Egyptian dukkah, or dukkah spice mix.
Dukkah is a condiment that has been around for hundreds of years, and was even written about as a peasant food in the 19th century. It’s become more present on the food scene in recent years thanks to a rising interest in regionally-inspired eating. Though this condiment originated in Egypt it has moved beyond northern African and has been adopted into Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cooking.
Dukkah is frequently purchased by:
- independent spice shops;
- seasoning companies;
- marinade, sauce, and snack manufacturers;
- cafes;
- salad and pizza restaurants;
- bakeries; and
- catering companies
Flavor Profile
Dukkah is nutty, rich, earthy, and warming, with bright tart and minty notes.
How To Use
Dukkah is typically eaten with Flatbread that’s been brushed with olive oil, which is often eaten as a breakfast dish. It adds considerable depth to sweet, tender Roasted Caramelized Acorn Squash with Dukkah. Sprinkle Dukkah over Baba Ghanoush, Homemade Hummus, or avocado toast. Mix in with rice for extra texture and use over salads as a garnish. Finish bitter greens, like broccoli rabe sautéed in garlic, with a handful of Dukkah and some shredded lemon zest. Swap it in to make a flavorful Crusted Baked Chicken. It’s got great flavor and a fun, chunky texture, so grab a spoon and snack on it by itself.
Dukkah pairs well with bread, rice, chicken, salmon, eggplant, chickpeas, butternut squash, salads, leafy greens, and olive oil.
