Red Beans and Rice Seasoning
Red Beans and Rice Seasoning
The rich, earthy smell of roasted garlic rises up from our salt-free Red Beans and Rice Seasoning, held aloft by the sprightly snap of celery. Nestled in aromatics from garlic and onion, this seasoning blend tastes pungent and bright. There’s a bit of smoky earth from cumin, and a bright green lift from verdant parsley. The brash camphor of bay leaf adds vegetal sass to the middle of this blend. Heat from the cayenne pepper begins early on the tongue; red pepper flakes carry that heat forward to make sure it sticks around from start to finish. Our Red Beans and Rice Seasoning is blended in our facility in small batches on a regular basis, so we can ensure that our customers are getting the freshest and most flavorful product possible.
Red beans and rice is a definitive dish from New Orleans, and is traditionally eaten in the Big Easy on…Mondays. The legend goes that Mondays were usually reserved as a laundry day in New Orleans, and in the era before washing machines, this was a labor-intensive process. Laundry took a tremendous amount of time to complete, but doing laundry didn’t mean you could neglect dinner. Frugal, time-prudent cooks would take the hambone from their Sunday dinners and put it to simmer in a pot of water with red beans, peppers, onions, celery, and some spices. This dish could cook all day with little tending and result in a relatively hassle-free, hearty dinner. And thus, the tradition was born.
Tips From Our Kitchen
While this blend was made with the classic New Orleans Red Beans and Rice dish in mind, don’t let that limit you. Blend with chickpeas or navy beans for a delicious party dip. Mix rice with this seasoning blend and an egg and fry for Cajun-style arancini. Use as the flavor base for sausage soup, then add an extra bit at the end to make the flavors pop. Sauté shrimp in butter with this blend and serve over grits. Add to a cheesy potato gratin. Stir into cauliflower rice and prove that Southern-style cooking can be healthy. Simmer with leeks for a rich and fragrant side dish.
Our salt-free Red Beans and Rice Seasoning is blended from Onion, garlic, tomato, celery seed, sugar, black pepper, file powder, extra hot chile powder, cumin, and sage.
