Suya Yaji Spice
Suya Yaji Spice is a spicy, MSG-free seasoning blend. It is also called yaji spice, yaji seasoning, suya seasoning, or suya spice.
The name of this blend is a composite of its components. Suya is a beef kabob, one of Nigeria’s most popular street foods. Yaji is the dry peanut-based spice rub used to season beef before grilling.
This spice blend is found in many varieties across central Africa, from Ghana and Nigeria to Sudan. Its complex flavor reflects the preferences of regions and individual chefs, but the basic ingredients of peanuts, chile pepper, salt, pepper, and paprika stay remarkably consistent.
Suya Yaji is often sought after by:
- marinade, snack, popcorn, meal kit, sauce, coffee and tea, and condiment manufacturers;
- bar & grill, BBQ, and fusion-style restaurants;
- seasoning companies;
- independent spice shops; and
- gourmet markets
Flavor Profile
Suya Yaji is nutty, spicy, and smoky, with onion and garlic undertones.
How To Use
Suya Yaji is commonly used as a seasoning on Suya, a street-food style skewer rubbed with this blend. Swap it in to make a nutty and bold African Vegetable Stew or an unforgettable Chicken Tagine. It can also go well in breadings, so choose it when making a succulent fried or Baked Chicken, or to give an African twist to Chicken Fried Steak.
Suya Yaji goes well with grilled or fried meats and vegetables, rolled into meatballs, or tossed with vegetables, beans, or alternate proteins like tempeh, tofu, or seitan. Great for seasoning stews, soups, dips, and gravies.
