- independent spice shops; and
- distilleries
We also carry Cracked Fennel, Ground Fennel, Organic Fennel Seed, and Organic Ground Fennel.
Flavor Profile
Fennel Seed has a warm, sweet licorice aroma and flavor with lemony top notes and a camphoraceous undertone.
How to Use
To make your Fennel Seed sweeter, toast seeds in a dry pan to bring out the volatile oils. This keeps the licorice flavor front and center while eliminating the bitter notes. Add toasted whole Fennel Seeds to Simple Red Marinara sauce, or try them in this hearty Beef and Zucchini Parmigiana. Stir them into the Turkey Sausage Bowl for extra flavor and a bit of crunch. They are delicious baked into breads so toss into the dough when making Pumpkin Biscuits. Use Fennel Seed to coat fish before baking, or sauté with onions as a base flavor in Greek Lemon Chicken. The toasted seeds can be ground in a mortar and pestle or spice grinder and added to lemon vinaigrette, warm Masala chai, or the soy-based Indonesian condiment Kecap Manis. It is a standard ingredient in pickles and sausage.
Fennel Seed pairs well with black pepper, cheese, pork, beef, chicken, fish, cabbage, mushrooms, potatoes, garlic, ginger, oregano, lemon, orange, clove, and cinnamon.
