Apple Pie Fries
For quality assurance, Jeff allowed a handful of people to try a spoonful or three (okay, maybe six) of his caramel dipping sauce, which ended up being extremely popular with the whole test kitchen crowd. A dipping sauce is not necessary, the apple pie fries are delicious on their own, but this was an extra kick of flavor that took the apple pie fries up a notch.
Jeff used our Apple Pie Spice for this recipe, but you could easily use a combination of cinnamon and nutmeg instead if you don’t have that on hand. Store bought pie crusts were our crusts of choice but making your own is wonderful too! Using the premade ones is good for when you don’t have a lot of time.
After the dough strips have been filled, use an egg wash and then spread some cinnamon sugar over the egg wash before baking the fries. The fries are basically tiny, flat pies. They are dangerously delicious and easy to over indulge on, so watch it! Be sure to have a crowd with you when you’re making these so it is harder for you to let the apple pie filling tempt you into eating every single piece.
These apple pie fries might as well have grown wings, with the way they flew right off the table. This may have even been the first recipe where every single person in our building wanted a taste. The caramel sauce was used generously, whether it was dipped into or poured directly over the fries. We suggest eating them with a tiny scoop of vanilla bean ice cream if you don’t have caramel sauce.
- 1 package refrigerated pie crusts
- 1 lb tart apples (we used Macintosh)
- 1 egg
- 2 tsp Apple Pie Spice
- 2 Tbsp sugar
- 2 Tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp Vermont Maple Sugar
- 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
- 1 tsp sugar, for topping
- Caramel sauce for dipping
- Preheat oven to 350 F. Allow pie crust to come to room temperature.
- Wash, peel and cube apples.
- In a medium pot over medium-low heat, combine apples, lemon juice, 2 Tbsp sugar and Apple Pie Spice and cook until apples are soft and the consistency of chunky applesauce. You don’t want the pieces too big, because it will cause issues when you assemble. Let cool for a few minutes.
- Grease cookie sheet or use silicone mat and set aside.
- Dust table with flour lightly and roll out pie crusts to approximately the same size.
- Spread apples onto bottom crust, to 1/8 inch of the edge. Place other crust on top.
- Cut into 1/2 inch strips, then into fry size pieces.
- Beat egg, and then brush crust with it. Sprinkle maple sugar, sugar, and cinnamon
- Transfer to the baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes.
- Serve with caramel sauce.
