Turkey Sausage and Spinach Rice Bowl
When talking about building a bowl, we’ve made our opinion known that there’s some strange, indefinable quality that makes it feel… different than when you eat it off of a plate. While with soup or chili there is definitely less of a choice in terms of vessel, with dishes like our Turkey, Spinach, and Rice Bowl the bowl feels more deliberate. Its contents are nestled inside. Its ingredients are simple, but each ingredient plays a role. It’s more than just a spoonful of stuff on a plate, it’s a scoop in a BOWL. Every bowl in our test kitchen is special in our eyes, and certain meals simply demand a more thoughtful carrier.
No matter what type of cuisine you’re interested in, chances are there’s a bed of white sitting under most of the dishes, like potatoes, noodles, or rice. What do all those things have in common? All three have starchy carbohydrates which help to fill up their respective audience and serve as a perfect neutral canvas for whatever veggies and proteins are available. Today, our preferred starchy medium is rice, and Chef Jeff mixed it up with turkey, spinach, and some Sweet Italian Sausage Seasoning. If you wanted to get a little more interesting and use something besides white rice, you could totally use pretty much any short little stubby guy- cooked whole grain rice, wild rice, quinoa, cauliflower rice… it’s all good. If anything, a departure from white rice might offer an interesting bite and texture to the dish, but the softness of white grain rice is comforting to a lot of people. Use what you like and have on hand.
Let’s talk turkey now. We used ground turkey to help keep it lean, but if you’d prefer to use any other ground meat- or even a vegetarian mince- go ahead! If you’re looking to explore more into the plant-based realm, there are plenty of varieties of grain and vegetable-based substitutes that offer the texture of a ground turkey or beef. Once you’ve established your protein, the flavors are limitless as well. Our Sweet Italian Sausage Seasoning is sweet and aromatic with notes of fennel and brown sugar, but if you were feeling more spicy you could also try the Hot Italian Sausage Seasoning, or the Mexican Chorizo Seasoning if you prefer a smokier, more savory flavor.
