Za’atar (Syrian) is an MSG-free seasoning blend that is extremely popular throughout the countries of the Middle East. It is also known as Syrian zaatar, zaatar Syrian, Syrian spices, or za'atar.

The different Middle Eastern countries tend to have a preferred za’atar blend, so you will find a wide array of za’atar styles as you explore this seasoning. Aside from being used to season cooked foods in the kitchen, za’atar is commonly kept on the table to add an extra dash to food right before eating.

Za’atar (Syrian) is regularly purchased by independent spice shops; pizza restaurants; catering companies; and olive oil shops.

We also have Za’atar Seasoning available.

Flavor Profile

Za’atar (Syrian) is nutty, tart, and earthy, with notes of lemon.

How To Use

Try Za’atar (Syrian) on crusty French bread in Za’atar Bread with Tomatoes. It is delicious sprinkled on hummus or eaten with labneh, a popular Middle Eastern cheese. Za’atar Seasoning makes a superb dry rub for roasted chicken, fish or lamb, like this crunchy Za’atar Crusted Baked Chicken. Stir it into ground lamb and enjoy some Za’atar Spiced Meatballs. We love it on firm or starchy vegetables like cauliflower or potatoes, and it transforms carrots in this Greek Burger and Za’atar Carrots. Za'atar Seasoning’s acidity is a terrific, savory balance to the sweetness of an oven roasted winter squash, so try using it to season Roasted Butternut Squash with Cranberries and Apples, or blend it into Spicy Pumpkin Soup for a new take on this recipe.

Za’atar (Syrian) is used as a table condiment, dusted on food, or stirred into some olive oil as a dip. Season breadings for chicken or fish, toss over roasted or grilled vegetables, rub over cheese, roast with hearty winter vegetables.
