Ground Nutmeg
Ground Nutmeg
Ground Nutmeg, Myristica fragrans, is also known as bulk ground nutmeg or nutmeg bulk. This spice comes from the seed of a tropical evergreen tree and has a rich, piney, camphor-like aroma.
Nutmeg is the interior seed of a fruit, and that seed is wrapped in a red, fibrous covering called an aril. That aril can be stripped away from the nutmeg and dried. This spice is known as Mace, and it imparts a lighter, more delicate nutmeg flavor.
Ground Nutmeg is popular with:
- seasoning companies;
- manufacturers of sauces, honey, chocolates, jerky and cured meats;
- bakeries;
- butcher shops;
- breweries;
- olive oil shops; and
- caterers
We also have Whole Nutmeg and Organic Ground Nutmeg available.
Flavor Profile
Ground Nutmeg is nutty, peppery, bittersweet and warm, with echoes of clove.
How To Use
The flavor of Ground Nutmeg goes hand in hand with holiday treats, but it’s found in a wide range of everyday products, like packaged baked goods, tortellini, and Coca-Cola. Nutmeg is often associated with baked goods, like banana or Pineapple Zucchini Quick Bread, or warm and cozy beverages. Think of the appeal of a cappuccino or Masala Chai with a sprinkling of Ground Nutmeg across the top.
Ground Nutmeg is a great secret ingredient in savory dishes like corn chowder and lamb meatballs. Add it to falafel or lentil stew. It’s often found in pasta dishes like Butternut Squash and Sage Lasagna, and adds woodsy personality to a classic German Spaetzle.
Ground Nutmeg pairs well with chocolate, fruit, vanilla, coconut milk, lemongrass, cheese, cream sauce, chiles, paprika, clove, turmeric, and coriander. Use it to make pies, beverages, DIY spice rubs, soups, stews, baked goods, pasta, potatoes, pork, spinach and other bitter greens, eggnog, and biscuits.
