Za’atar Seasoning, pronounced "zaa-TAR,” is a Middle Eastern blend that is also called zaatar, zatar, zaatar seasoning, or zaatar spice. This blend is MSG-free.

Za’atar has been used for centuries across the Middle East and northern Africa. Recipes for this spice mix were individualized and were often well guarded secrets. Za'atar is usually some combination of sumac, sesame, herbs, and salt, which are then accented by a wide array of ingredients that make it personalized.

This blend is popular with olive oil shops; independent spice shops; American, Mediterranean, and healthy or vegan restaurants; seasoning companies; and subscription manufacturers.

We also have Za'atar (Syrian) available, which is blended with lemon peel and anise instead of thyme.

Flavor Profile

Za’atar Seasoning has a complex, nutty, woodsy intensity with floral undertones and an acidic lift.

How to Use

Za’atar Seasoning is an excellent complement to fresh fruits and vegetables, so sprinkle it into Za’atar Bread with Tomatoes. It's a delicious garnish for Homemade Hummus. Stir into yogurt or rub over labneh, a strained yogurt cheese that is popular in Middle Eastern cuisine. It's a wonderful seasoning for Za’atar Crusted Baked Chicken. Za’atar Spiced Meatballs showcase how well it goes with lamb. Za'atar Seasoning is tart and acidic and provides balance when roasting sweet Roasted Butternut Squash with Cranberries and Apples.

Use Za'atar Seasoning on dips, breads, cheeses, with meats like chicken, fish, or lamb, over roasted or grilled vegetables, and as a tableside condiment like you would salt or pepper.
