Jamaican Jerk Seasoning
Jamaican Jerk Seasoning
Jamaican Jerk Seasoning is a sweet and spicy Caribbean blend that is salt- and MSG-free. This blend is terrific with chicken, pork, fish, and even vegetables. It is also referred to simply as jerk seasoning.
The practice of treating meat with Jamaican spices for cooking and preservation date to at least the 15th century. It is associated with the Taino people, who were part of the Caribbean’s indigenous population; in practicality, the Taino had probably been using jerk methods for much longer to tenderize tough cuts of meat. They passed these techniques on to other inhabitants as they came to Jamaica. The term comes from the word charqui, or “dried meat”, derived from the Quechua language and adopted by the Spanish.
Jamaican Jerk Seasoning is popular with seasoning companies; olive oil shops; mustard, dip mix, meal mix, and subscription box manufacturers; and spice shops.
Flavor Profile
Jamaican Jerk Seasoning is hot, sweet, and fragrant, thanks to the spicy presence of Scotch bonnet chiles, sugars and sweet spices like cinnamon and allspice, and aromatic onion and thyme.
